Traffic Count File Development for TransCAD Model Validation and Calibration
SEMCOG has recently built a new travel demand model using TransCAD. The model calibration and validation requires traffic count data input from numerous sources including MDOT, county road commissions, and local communities. SEMCOG awarded us a contract to develop an efficient process to automatically retrieve and format count data from available sources to meet the requirements of the model calibration and validation. There were three main objectives in this project:
  • Travel Forecast Model Calibration/Validation State-of-the-Practice Assessment
  • Traffic Count Data Specification and Update Process
  • Traffic Count File Development for the TransCAD Model

Big House Geographic Information System
Few structures in Michigan ellicit more emotional response from the public than the University of Michigan's football stadium—the Big House. So when the renovations become necessary, a lot of eyes are focused on the plans. To help the university in selecting the best design option, Midwestern Consulting has created a GIS-based seating model of the stadium. The spatial model contains information such as the exact postion of each seat and average seat width. The model has allowed the university to consider various seating and aisle width configurations and instantly see how they would affect the overall seating capacity. The model can also be used in the future to create a web-based seat selection chart to facilitate ticket sales.

Oakland County Signal System Optimization
As a subconsultant to Parsons, Midwestern Consulting is working on the Signal System Optimization Phase-3 project for the Road Commission for Oakland County. The project includes about 247 signalized intersections. Midwestern Consulting is responsible for data collection/management and development of a Traffic Signal GIS (TSGIS). The project is expected to take 18 months and result in optimized signal timing, improved traffic flow and safer intersections.

Major Street System / Traffic Plan Analysis
City of Portage
While the frantic pace of development in the last decade may be slowing, it has left many communities with the need to catch up with infrastructure improvements to support vastly increased traffic. To meet the demands, the City of Portage maintains a comprehensive approach to manage its transportation system. As a part of the effort, the City is initiating a major street network traffic study. The primary objectives of the study are to review the current major street network, to analyze traffic and crash data, as well as to identify transportation improvements. The study will also update the City’s Major Thoroughfare Plan and develop Access Management Policies.

Traffic Count Database System (TCDS)
The web-based Traffic Count Database System (TCDS) is for management and analysis of traffic count data. TCDS provides traffic engineers and planners with an efficient tool to collect, input, validate, edit, and analyze traffic count data. It facilitates direct data download from counters, quick data retrieval and safe data storage, while eliminating tedious manual data input that is prone to errors. It significantly reduces the effort required to manage traffic count data and assist you in making objective decisions.

Woodward Ave Signal Optimization
As part of the FHWA Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program, MDOT is working on the Traffic Signal Timing Optimization of the Woodward Avenue corridor from downtown Detroit to Eight Mile Road, which consists of 51 signals. This project website has been developed to manage relevant project data and provide MDOT and the project team with instant access to the data and project results.

I-75 East-West Crossing Study
Gaylord, Michigan
Currently, there are few options to alleviate traffic congestion in the Gaylord area and Midwestern Consulting is tasked with traffic data collection and creating alternative traffic flow models using the SYNCHRO computer simulation program. Unique to this project is the fact that the peak traffic periods occur on weekends, not during the normal business week. Thus, the study must consider the impact of significant recreational vehicle volumes and their contribution to delay and congestion. The one year study will identify feasible alternatives for achieving improved traffic flow in the Gaylord and surrounding township environments as local governments consider future land use changes.

Traffic Crash Location System (TCLS)
MDOT and its traffic safety partner agencies are working to improve the accuracy and timeliness of traffic crash data to enable stakeholders to make quality traffic safety improvements. As part of the efforts, a project to locate protested (unlocated) traffic crashes for calendar years 2001 and 2002 is underway. A secure web-based Traffic Crash Location System (TCLS) has been developed to improve the crash location process and data quality.

Main Street Traffic Study
The Belleville community – Van Buren Township, the City of Belleville and Sumpter Township – is experiencing a significant rate of growth, which is generating increased traffic and placing a heavy burden on Main Street. The Main Street Traffic Study is proposed to develop improvement strategies to increase corridor capacity while improving the viability of the downtown shopping district. The project website has been developed to enhance communication among the project team, Belleville DDA stakeholders, and the public.

Water/Sewer GIS
A Water/Sewer Geographic Information System (GIS) is being developed for the Charter Township of Augusta. The GIS contains the data of property description, tax assessment, water sewer usage and billing. The web-based system allows users to search the data with just a web browser. The system is secure with a password-protected mechanism. For access, please contact us.

Northfield Development
The Land GIS includes information about property ownership, assessment value, and natural features. It is being used by Midwestern Consulting in the preparation of an Environmental Assessment of the replacement of the interchange located at US 23 and North Territorial Road. The Land GIS also is helpful to numerous land owners and potential developers to evaluate various development options in the 1600-acre area around US 23 and North Territorial Road in Northfield Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan.

Public comments relating to the environmental impacts of replacing the interchange can be sent via the email link below.
